IN VENICE | Solayman

Once a snake charmer in the souks of Morocco, Solayman now lives in LA, where he plays his flute at the Drum Circle every Sunday night. After giving up his passion of being a pilot and flying cargo planes for most of his life, he now works the nightshift as a security guard. Often bored and desillusioned by his every day life, he finds peace and meaning in being part of the Venice Drum Circle.

IN VENICE is a series of three short portraits that follows the lives of Myriah, Terrell and Solayman. Their individual stories are tied together by their mutual deep connection to Venice Beach. A unique and colorful place that serves as a creative space and emotional outlet for many.

Venice Beach certainly isn’t as glossy and flawless as other Californian beaches. It has long been known as the place to be for weirdos, artists, musicians and it is also home for a lot of homeless and mentally ill people. However, the many diverse groups that have formed over the years, have been very inclusive and provided many with family like communities. Terrell has been part of the Venice Rollerskate Disco for more than 40 years, Myriah has co-founded the female skate group GRLSWIRL and Solayman still rides his car across the busy LA traffic twice a week to be able to take part in the Drum Circle.

IN VENICE is a trilogy of short intimate portraits that give us a little glimpse into their lives and and highlights the importance of belonging and community in the often lonely world we live in.
